Urban Farm Assistant Manager at Carpenter Art Garden

Full-Time position: $33,500 annually

Days/Schedule: 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, with weekends as needed during the growing season. The work schedule is flexible hours based on climate and growing season.

This position works alongside our Urban Farmer.

The Urban Farm Assistant Manager is responsible for the overall management of the Carpenter Art Garden Urban Farm, including marketing, value-added products, field preparation, crop production, equipment maintenance, and staff supervision. 

Urban farming involves strenuous physical work in all weather conditions. Daily activities include bed preparation, transplanting, seed sowing, watering, weeding, tilling, thinning, composting, harvesting, produce handling, storage, and minor construction.

Typical functions include but are not limited to:

  • Using organic growing practices, oversee, direct, coordinate, and perform the farming duties at our two urban farms. 

  • Oversees flower and plant selections for buildings and grounds, as well as perform planting and maintenance

  • Evaluate farm programs and ensure that the farm complies with all policies being observed and administered by staff and that farm operations are accomplishing goals.

  • Develop and revise, as necessary, all program policies and procedures to ensure best practices are followed, documented, and passed on.

  • Work with team on farm projects as required and participate in strategic planning efforts for the farm.

  • Maintain accurate records of all relevant farm data, including but not limited to seeding and planting dates, harvest poundage, revenue, expenses, and number of volunteers.

  • Assist in preparing and monitoring annual farm budgets.

  • Evaluate and purchase new equipment to increase efficiencies.

  • Planning and coordinating farm educational and outreach programs and events such as tours, volunteer workdays, on-farm classes, farmers’ markets, garden events, speaking engagements, and fundraising events.

  • Facilitates in-school and after-school garden education programs that engage student learning.

  • Establish partnerships with other institutions with common interests in agriculture, health, etc.

  • Facilitate weekly farm meetings.

  • Manage Farmer’s Market and CSA program; Monitor market income and processes; track all expenditures.

  • Coordinate distribution of produce to our clients.  

Qualifications:

  • Passion for sustainable farming practices, serving others, community & and youth development. 

  • Demonstrated, or willing to learn, a strong understanding of agricultural practices, whole farm planning, crop rotation, soil enhancement methods, soil science, and general ecological principles.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences and participate effectively as a team member.

  • Ability to organize volunteer groups safely and productively.

  • Expertise in balancing physical labor, administrative duties, and planning/guiding farm expansion.

  • Ability to lift 25-50 pounds.

  • Valid TN driver’s license with a safe driving record

  • The ability to endure physical labor for extended periods in all climate and weather conditions. 

  • Excellent administrative, organization, and communication skills.  

  • A strong work ethic and ability to work independently and with others.  

  • A flexible work schedule, with some evening and weekend hours required.  

  • The desire for a long-term position.
